It is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, built from travertine and marble at the terminal point of the ancient Acqua Vergine aqueduct.
The composition centres on the figure of Oceanus, sometimes identified as Neptune, depicted driving a shell-shaped chariot pulled by two sea horses, one restless and the other calm, symbolising the contrasting moods of the sea.
On either side are two niches housing the statues of Health and Abundance.
Among the many legends associated with the fountain, the coin-tossing tradition is the most famous: according to popular belief, throwing a coin into the fountain with your back turned guarantees your return to Rome.
